What is inorganic arsenic? Arsenic is a naturally occurring element in the environment. When combined with elements other than carbon, it is called inorganic arsenic. Inorganic arsenic is found in soil, groundwater, surface waters, air, and in some foods. EPA has worked on updating its IRIS assessment of inorganic arsenic for many years.

Review of EPA's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Process provides an overview of some general issues associated with IRIS assessments. This report then addresses evidence identification and evaluation for IRIS assessments and discusses evidence integration for hazard evaluation and methods for calculating reference values and unit risks.

The IRIS Program is located within EPA’s Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA) in the Office of Research and Development (ORD).

The placement of the IRIS Program in ORD is intentional. It ensures that IRIS can develop impartial toxicity information independent of its use by EPA’s program and regional offices to set.

EPA's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is a human health assessment program that evaluates information on health effects that may result from exposure to environmental contaminants.

The IRIS program is a critical part of our chemical regulatory system, and it must be improved. The current deficiencies and lack of confidence in the program are resulting in delays and unnecessary costs as the frequent shortcomings in draft assessments are addressed. Most well-known for its gold-standard chemical toxicity reviews, EPA’s IRIS Program is a non-regulatory program that provides critical information and scientific expertise to support decision-making across the agency’s programs and regional offices as well as to other federal agencies, states, localities, and tribes.

The Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is a program within the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that is responsible for developing toxicologic assessments of environmental contaminants.

An IRIS assessment contains hazard identifications and dose-response assessments of various chemicals related to cancer and noncancer outcomes. Inhalation Unit Risk: 3 x per µg/m 3 Extrapolation Method: Multistage model with linear extrapolation from the point of departure (BMDL), summed risk.

IRIS program is essential, given the challenging environment that currently exists. Seemingly all IRIS stakeholders except NAS are perceived as having inherent conflicts that result in their actions and motives being questioned. The EPA itself is in the difficult.

As I blogged about earlier, the FY Interior, Environment and Related Agencies bill posted in November by the Senate Appropriations committee majority would eliminate EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program. Located within the research arm of EPA, this non-regulatory program produces top.

Even as GOP lawmakers and other critics push to eliminate EPA's once influential Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program, its leaders are slated to appear before an upcoming National Academy of Sciences (NAS) workshop to outline changes they have made in their first year and make the case for the program's preservation.

EPA’s ability to effectively implement its mission of protecting public health and the environment is dependent on assessing the risks posed by chemicals in a credible and timely manner. Such assessments are the cornerstone of scientifically sound environmental decisions, policies, and regulations under a variety of statutes, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Air Act.
